FST's Board of Directors is comprised of up to 12 members who serve voluntarily, generally for two three-year terms. Directors are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or landed immigrants in Canada.
The Board may also appoint two ex-officio members to one-year terms. Ex-officio members, who may attend and participate at any board meeting, include a representative of the agency's legal counsel, the Past President, and, possibly, an outgoing member whose valued contributions are maintained in this capacity.
A focused role for strong leadership
The FST Board's primary role is to provide strategic leadership for FST affairs in accordance with the organization's Mission, Vision and Values. To fulfill its role, the board engages in long-term planning and ensures accountability to the public.
The Board's tasks include liaising with agency constituents, determining and carrying out governing policies and overseeing the performance of the Executive Director. The Board also serves an important role as the steward of the agency's financial and human resources.
In fulfilling its responsibilities, the Board is accountable to all FST members and the public. FST members are individuals in the community who have expressed interest in the work of our organization and completed a membership form.
Recruiting directors
The recruitment of directors is accomplished through the Governance Committee. The Committee proactively seeks new candidates through a variety of means, receives letters of interest from individuals willing to join the Board and selects applicants for interviews. The Committee makes recommendations to the Board which, in turn, recommends candidates to FST General Membership. The election of new Board members is conducted during the Annual General Meeting (typically held in June).
Officers - providing leadership to the work of the board
Officers of the Board include the president, vice-presidents (usually two), secretary and treasurer. The president's role is to ensure the integrity of the Board's process and to represent the Board to outside parties. The vice-presidents and past president assist the president as required and provide for continuity in the leadership of the Board. The president is selected by the Board from amongst its members for a term of two years.
Board committees
The Board may establish working groups to provide support for its work or advice on specific issues. Board committees include: Financial Affairs and Governance. Board working groups include Development Working Group.
