Youth volunteer opportunity: Be a witness to poverty
Our Social Reform unit is recruiting young people aged 16-21 to help document examples of poverty in Toronto. Volunteers may use a variety of multimedia tools and media including photographs, videos, paintings, drawings, or collages. Volunteer hours can be recognized as Community Service Hours for high school students. For more information, consult the volunteer posting.
FST marks International Day Against Homophobia
Staff in FST's David Kelley LGBTQ & HIV/Aids Counselling Services unit wore red T-shirts to mark International Day Against Homophobia on May 17. The Pride rainbow flag also flew high outside our Church Street office where there was a display of posters, brochures and information about the day's history and this year's theme - Sexual Diversity in the Workplace.
The World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental health illnesses on May 17, 1990. The idea to hold an annual day to fight homophobia originated in Canada. It was started by Fondation Émergence in Quebec in 2003. With the participation of partners, this national day has spread to Belgium and France and a host of other countries, making it an international day.
